When I grow up ...

Owen's Quote of the Day: Mommy, when I grow up, can I be a Seahawks player? (Yes!) Daddy played football, 'cept he was a Pretzel. (High School Pretzel, to be exact!)

The boys were SO lucky this August ~ Uncle Jared and Aunt Janae took them to their first professional football game ~ a preseason Seahawks game at Qwest! I have never even been to a Hawks game there!! (I haven't seen the Hawks since the days of the Dome!) But then again, I'm not dreaming of being a Seahawk. I hope they take him every chance they get.
*One of my favorite Owen-isms is "'cept" - I've never heard him say "but." ; )

Last Game of the Season ~ and it's Halloween!

We arrived to the field early enough to warm up ~ then spraypaint the players' hair! Collin went blue, Micah went red, Eli went blue with red stripes, and Owen and Luke remained toeheads. The colors were a hit!! Just a little something special since it was the last game AND Halloween!
Collin and Owen both wrapped up the season with (cheered on by G&G J, Uncle Jared and Aunt Janae, and Miss Natalie) with awesome energy and assertion, increased knowledge and skill, and goals!

Owen's Playing Soccer Too!

He may be just three and a half, but the kid is passionate and he can hustle! But most importantly, he WANTS to play, to be in there, to GET THAT BALL! Owen has been subbing in on the team (we had a low team count and lots of illness this season), and he loves it! He is a full head (or more) shorter than some of the kids, and his kicks and throws aren't quite as powerful as some, but he's quick and fearless and has quickly become a star player! His technique fits with a Sweeper position because he zooms all over the field - wherever the ball migrates, and then he steamrolls into position and takes over possession. It's awesome to watch! He's one of the team's top-scorers, maintaining a minimum of two goals each Saturday and many assists (some purposefully to his brother!)!

And that's the best part! They have so much fun playing out there ~ together!!

Halloween Art by Collin

Not sure if you can read that or not, but the fourth picture is a close-up of the third. The piece features a pumpkin, a ghost, "Boo", and "Happy Halloween." The best part is that the "o" in Halloween is a Jack-O-Lantern!

Pumpkin Carving 2009

This year's Pumpkin Carving was especially fun because the boys were old enough to really do it themselves! Collin and Owen stenciled their designs onto their pumpkins then spent an hour going through and sorting out the pumpkin seeds while I emptied each of the pumpkin bellies.
Kate painted a picture!
Owen loved to squish his hands through the pumpkin and lift it up in the air to watch it dangle --- eewww! Collin, on the other hand, preferred NOT to have his hands in the muck and carefully pried each seed free with little mess.
Make a S-C-A-R-Y face!
Kate got bored and we played a bit.
Let the Carving Begin!
Daddy's Pumpkins
Our Stoop - Collin's pumpkin was a classic Jack-O-Latern, and Owen's was very appropriately a dinosaur! *Dinosaurs are O's current passion. He pulls out his bucket of dinos daily, and his new favorite show is PBS's Dinosaur Train. Check it out if you have little boys ~ super great!)

Have you Rode the Duck?!

If you haven't yet rode The Duck, then you should! Corney and goofy, it's also adventurous and fun! The Duck is a vehicle that drives on Seattle's city streets along the Elliot Bay waterfront, past the sports arenas, through Pioneer Square, up Hwy 99, then plunges into Lake Union with stunning views Seattle's skylines and GasWorks Park. The tour guide is a historical hoot, with music, jokes, dancing and laughter. And don't forget QUACKING!!!

Sunshine Shining on Me! I can't wait to ...

Fall is in the air ~ leaves cover more of the ground each morning, and it's darker longer each morning and sooner each evening. On a bright and sunny day, the air is crisp and cool! We get to wrap in warm sweaters and nothing is better than a warm beverage cup on cool fingertips. I love Fall!! And we are making the most of the greatest of days! We enjoyed Sunday afternoon at Zuanich Point Park ...
Kate practiced her balance on my girlfriend Clara's kids' skateboard. She demonstrated an amazing sense of balance. It reminded me of my sister, who amazingly as a child could balance on her knees on top of the knee board, while floating in the water and waiting for the boat to "hit it." This was quite impressive for ~ as anyone who has ever knee-boarded knows ~ pulling yourself up and onto your knees while battling the wake and the pull of the ski-rope is the hardest part! She was able to skip the challenge and start where the fun began! Can't wait to see if Kate has that same talent!
Our Little Monkey (look closely ~ her shoes are on the wrong feet!)
Owen has been our Caterpillar-Whisperer this season. He seems to have a sixth-sense about where they are hiding and loves to befriend each one.
Marcel on the other hand is greatly taken with Katelyn. Wherever she went, he followed. He watched her closely, studying her and trying to make her laugh! He brought her "treasures" from around the park, including a large branch that he beat on the ground making music that she danced to! It was so cute! When she sat on this monument, he rushed to sit beside her, talking to her and trying to hold her hand. (how young it all begins, really!). All of his demur was fascinating to Kate ~ she played right along, innocently "driving him crazy." Ultimately he leaned in for a kiss, and she backed further and further away then leaned her forehead in for a snuggle. Good girl, Kate. He was pleased too and ~ with a big grin ~ then rushed off to pick pine cones from the brush with Collin, Owen, and MaryJane.

*Interestingly, at the same time this was all going on, MaryJane had instructed the boys that they were all to play house. Collin was the Dad, MaryJane was the Mom, and Owen was the Son. They had built their house in the forest and were preparing a meal of "ribs and corn like Grandpa Jacobs made" when MaryJane rushed over to Collin and said something to the effect of "Ok, here's what you're going to do." He immediately turned to her and said, "You don't need to tell me what to do! I'm the DAD! We should tell Owen ~ our SON!" Owen just went on gathering pine cones.

Shaw Day Trip

We spent Friday galavanting the ferry system and the great island Shaw! We were tentative at first because the forecast called for rain, but we lucked out and had bright blue skies most of the day! But the night before, it had definitely rained. And leave it to my kids to find the one leftover puddle on an otherwise dry ferry deck ~ and for Kate to fall into it! (in her defense, her brother ran straight into her ~ or they ran straight into each other ~ tough to say! at any rate ...) she was getting all kinds of "so cute" comments before the puddle-incident, but afterwards ~ you couldn't help but smile ~ and most ended up laughing at the cutest sight ever!

I caught this shot just in time as he was turning to say "AHHH! It's Cold!"
Our beach comber
We drove onto the ferry but biked the island. Kate took a nap in one of her favorite places ~ with the sea scent and fresh air swirling around and the warm sunlight on her fingers and toes!

Kate was interested at first ~ then she touched it. And she prompty pointed repeatedly to the water below to get Grandpa to put it back in the water. He didn't understand (he didn't know she signed "Down"!) so she started to pull it down and show him what she meant! He got it that time! Put that thing back where it came from ~ Yuck! ; )

Our departing ferry was running late, but a deer showed up and the boys honed their tracking skills! The deer "played" for a good half hour!!

Kate at 18 Months

She has teeth! Two of them! One on top and one on bottom ~ and two more on their way! Kate at 18 months is the happiest little girl!

She loves to dance and sing. Her dance moves include a shoulder shrug, a head bop (side to side), a penguin move, a flying move (arms out and swirling around), typical "white man" move (arms bent at the elbows, hands in the air, alternating pressure from one foot to the other while swaying side to side), and her own version of breakdance (typically in the downward dog position with her head on the ground and her hands up behind her pointing to the sky)! If you hum a song, she'll mimic you. Give a hoot, she'll echo you! Listen closely and you'll discover that she's almost always singing!

Words are popping out every day now! She has a few staples: Mama, Dada, Down, Cheers, Dog-Dog, Hi, Grandma, Grandpa, Night-Night, Tickle-Tickle, and Car (pronounced "Kah" and spoken super loudly when we're out front and the boys are riding bikes and a car pulls onto our street!). She now signs: Down, Please, Milk, More, All Done, Eat, and Bird.

She loves her bed. Our bedtime and nap routine are so easy! I can hardly believe how blessed we are! After a bath and cup of milk (cold! our first child to drink cold milk!), we take her to her crib, lights out, curtains drawn, and she literally dives into the crib for her favorite blankie and bunny. I pull the string on her music, she rolls over, and I say goodnight and walk out. It's that simple. Amazing and beautiful. Same for naps. Wow.

Kate adores her family. She's so affectionate, constantly giving us hugs and loves. She'll run from room to room, laughing and giggling, tackling each of us with big, grinning hugs! I love to observe her with the boys, enjoying the relationships they are building. The boys adore her right back.

Kate has (appropriately) a very different relationship with each of her brothers. Kate and Collin are always tickling, and he's always reading or explaining/teaching things to her. He almost always is the first one she sees each morning, and they spend 5-10 minutes chatting their good-mornings before I enter to get her out of her crib. Last night as we were driving home, I looked into the backseat, and Kate had her hand resting on Collin's knee. First she was bouncing it up and down to the beat of the music, then she was rubbing his knee in a "hand hug" (a family signature move), and then she eventually fell asleep with her hand cupped around his knee. So cute.

Kate and Owen on the other hand are always tackling and laughing. He's extremely protective of her and is the first to shout out if he thinks she's in trouble. He's "saved her life" on more than one occasion. ; ) They play together now regularly!

Kate is quite the dare devil! She's not afraid of anything! She's perfecting her jump (so stinkin' cute! hand is the air, knees bent, "jump!", and she's up on her toes!). She loves to practice her large motor skills and works hard to keep up with her brothers!!

Kate's favorite past times (besides playing with her brothers) are putting shoes on and off, trying on her clothes, and toting her purse around the house with Cars cars and old Starbucks cards in it. She's also very into playing with the cars (shooting them down the slide is her favorite) and coloring!

Eating. She eats everything. Literally!! She's a great eater, and -much like her mother- will clean her plate and everyone else's at each meal. ; )

So far, she's not allergic to anything except dairy -- she has to have lactose-free milk. Small amounts of yogurt and cheese don't seem to affect her.

Kate is simply a joy! She brings sunshine to our family, and as my grandmother said yesterday, "she just fits in her family so well!" Love you, Kate!!
